ROBIN HOODS COUNTY
THE AREA and attractions

Hawthorn Hideaway is situated adjacent to the Chesterfield Canal, in Nottinghamshire, the home of the infamous Robin Hood and his merry men. There is plenty to keep you entertained on site that you will probably not want to leave, from the bubbling hot tubs, the sizzling sauna, relaxing massage yurt, cosy BBQ hut, scenic grounds and canal side seating as well as your own woodland garden with BBQ area and feature day bed to relax in and enjoy some R & R with your special someone. However if you wanted to wonder further there is lots to see and do.

Seth Ellis is available for public boat trips on the canal at Drakesholes, Retford and Ranby and is run by the Canal and River Trust. It is well worth a trip if you are not travelling out on Kingfisher Narrowboat, as the canal is beautiful by water.

Sherwood Forest and the famous Major Oak, which according to local folklore,  was Robin Hood's shelter where he and his merry men slept. The oak tree is between 800 and 1,000 years old. Also an art and visitor centre contains art studios and a cafe and hosts special events.

Choose from 3 counties to visit as we are on the borders of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. On site there are almost uninterrupted views to the west and stunning sunsets. There are nearby rivers, woodlands and farmland for those nature lovers, with rare fauna and flora along the canal path. If you are feeling energetic you can walk or  cycle the towpath all the way to Chesterfield , the full length of the canal being 46 miles long. The market towns of Bawtry (South Yorkshire), Retford (North Nottinghamshire) and Gainsborough (Lincolnshire) are all within a 15 minutes drive. Bawtry especially has excellent boutique shops, bars and restaurants.

Why not visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Its only a 20 minute drive away and its the UK's number 1 walk-through wildlife adventure, with some amazing animals including the UK's only polar bears, as well as lions, tigers, black rhinos and many more. Or why not take to the skies with a flying experience, giving you the opportunity to fly a plane yourself at Yorkshire Aero Club or climb the robes at Go Ape, Sherwood?  If you'd prefer to keep your feet on the ground, why not dress up and enjoy a day  at the races and visit Doncaster Racecourse only a 30 minute drive  away.

For a bit of local history and education visit Gainsborough Old Hall. It is over 500 years old  and is one of the best preserved timber framed manor houses in the UK. It is less than a 15 minute drive away. Or drive further a field to Europe's largest antiques centre at Hemswell 25 minutes away, the beautiful, historic Doddington Hall and Gardens 35 minutes away on Lincolnshire or the historic and famous

Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle, home of an original  1215 Magna Carta , about a 40 minute drive away.

Cleethorpes beach with its famous and newly restored Pier is a 1 hour drive away.

Getting here - If you're coming from Leeds, Hull or Sheffield we're close to an hour away. Nearby Retford and Doncaster both have excellent train links and both can be reached from London in under 90 minutes. For those arriving by air, the Doncaster Sheffield Airport is 20 a minute drive away. We're close to the A1 amd M180 for those coming by car. Or try something different and reduce your carbon footprint and arrive by bus or arrive via the Chesterfield Canal towpath by cycle or foot.

A GUEST PERSPECTIVE

"Hawthorne Hideaway A lovely bolt hole with lots of scrumptious treats and activities. We booked a duo massage (sublime), afternoon tea (generous variety and even included a bunch of daffodils!), sauna (fabulous) and BBQ hut with hamper (high quality and so lavish, we had the chops and enough vegetables for dinner the following night). All highly recommended. We enjoyed walks along the canal and in the ground’s illuminated woodland. An evening glass of fizz by the water’s edge & hot tub bubbles under the stars. Our lodge (we stayed in The Swan) was cosy and had plenty of quality fittings; comfy bed, log burner, super shower and the kitchen was fitted with all the basics. The breakfast hamper provided enough for at least two breakfasts (we enhanced with extra teabags). There are too many positives to list and it’s probably nice to leave a few surprises for future guests to discover for themselves. A big thank you to Sarah, the site team and local suppliers, but especially to Josephine for your warmth and hospitality and being on hand for us when needed. We will return for another adventure soon. Kind regards, Angela and Paul"
