Welcome to Hawthorn Hideaway, the perfect destination for couples seeking a romantic getaway in Yorkshire. Nestled in a serene woodland waterside setting, our luxury lodges and stunning narrowboat offer a tranquil escape tailored for two.
Hi, we are Ronnie and Josephine, the owners of Hawthorn Hideaway. We would love to welcome you to our little slice of heaven, a couples retreat with luxury accommodation including two lodges and one unique narrowboat.
We started planning this small family business following Ronnie’s diagnosis of cancer when our daughter Melody was just one month old in 2014. Our priorities changed, and with Ronnie working in music as a Production Manager—a job he loved dearly—being away in London Monday to Friday was no longer viable. Our focus became spending more quality time together, helping Ronnie get fitter, and enjoying the outdoors more. Initially, we aimed to create a glamping site and move closer to our family in Lincolnshire, but we found a beautiful spot in the Nottinghamshire countryside. From there, our vision grew into a unique retreat for couples, blending the charm of glamping with luxury, comfort, and style.
When we opened in August 2020, Ronnie’s health was good, and his cancer was in regression. Despite COVID-19, the business thrived, proving to be the perfect place for couples to stay and isolate. Unfortunately, in December 2021, shortly after filming for Channel 4’s Four in a Bed, Ronnie’s condition worsened, and his treatment became palliative. Despite the hardest years of our lives, we continued with Hawthorn Hideaway while I also carried on my work as a GP. Through it all, we have received five-star reviews and glowing feedback from our guests on our website, Google, Facebook, and TripAdvisor.
We have loved meeting the many couples who have visited Hawthorn Hideaway, some of whom we now consider friends. We have curated special experiences by collaborating with local businesses to offer massage treatments, private fine dining, boat trips, photo shoots, intimate weddings, and celebration packages that include flowers, balloons, and handmade chocolates. We take each day as it comes and look forward to many more memorable moments. Our journey has been exciting, and our time on Four in a Bed was a particular highlight. We hope to welcome you here one day.
Hawthorn Hideaway is nestled within a picturesque two-acre woodland adjacent to our home and the scenic Chesterfield Canal. Upon arrival, you will enter through our gated and secure entrance, with car parking and bike storage provided. A short walk takes you to your accommodation, where a personal garden trolley is available to transport your luggage or goodies to the BBQ cabin.
For exclusivity, there are only two lodges and one narrowboat on site: Owl Lodge, Swan Lodge, and Kingfisher. Each is uniquely designed, well-spaced apart, and insulated, with double-glazed windows and patio doors that let nature in. Enjoy your private raised deck, listen to birdsong, and perhaps spot a woodpecker or a kingfisher flashing across the pond or canal. The narrowboat offers an insulated interior with spacious decks at both ends.
